Abstract: Edible Biodegradable Film for Pesticide and Contaminant Removal in Fresh Produce This invention describes an edible, biodegradable protective film for fruits and vegetables, designed to remove pesticide residues, heavy metals, and microbial contaminants while preserving freshness and extending shelf life. The film comprises a polysaccharide-based biopolymer matrix infused with natural antimicrobial agents, activated carbon nanoparticles, and antioxidant stabilizers, forming a breathable, water-soluble, and transparent coating. Upon application via spraying or dipping, the film adheres to the produce surface, actively adsorbing toxins, inhibiting microbial proliferation, and preventing oxidation-induced discoloration. The film’s moisture-regulating properties maintain optimal hydration balance, reducing spoilage without refrigeration. The protective layer dissolves upon rinsing or can be safely consumed, ensuring food safety without synthetic preservatives or plastic-based coatings. The invention provides a sustainable, non-toxic, and legally compliant solution for contaminant removal and post-harvest preservation, applicable to commercial food processing, supply chains, and consumer use.
