Abstract: Current GPS tracking systems for wildlife monitoring are not energy-efficient due to several factors. Most conventional GPS trackers transmit data frequently and continuously, consuming significant power during both data collection and transmission phases. Raw GPS data contains large amounts of information, leading to high data transmission requirements, while the lack of advanced compression techniques results in larger data packets and higher energy use for transmission. Additionally, many systems do not effectively implement low-power sleep modes, keeping the GPS and communication modules active continuously, which drains the battery quickly. Furthermore, current systems often rely solely on batteries without integrating solar panels or energy harvesting mechanisms, leading to frequent battery replacements. By using compressive sensing, data can be sparsely sampled and compressed, reducing both data volume and transmission frequency, resulting in significant energy savings.
