Abstract: An extended reality (XR) simulation apparatus and method for agricultural machinery training. A physical tractor chassis is rigidly mounted on a 6-degree-of-freedom Stewart motion platform. An operator wears a virtual reality head-mounted display whose outward-facing optical and infrared sensors enable markerless, controller-free hand tracking via an OpenXR skeletal mesh, allowing natural interaction with virtual steering, hydraulic levers, touchscreens, and power-take-off controls. A central computing unit executes a deterministic physics engine that continuously calculates ASABE-standard implement draft forces and Bekker and Mohr–Coulomb soil–tire interactions. The resulting force vectors drive, through a classical washout motion-cueing algorithm, the platform actuators to physically reproduce terrain vibration, draft resistance, and shifting centre of gravity, while a spatial audio engine using perceptually optimised virtual acoustics and head-related transfer functions modulates engine-load and implement sounds. The invention translates software physics into tangible kinematic and acoustic feedback, providing safe, repeatable, certification- grade operator training.
