MUMBAI, India, June 26 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641055032 A) filed by Velammal Engineering College Autonomous on April 30, 2026, for Fail Safe Design Of Logistics Drone Clamping Module.

Inventor includes P. A. Manoharan.

The application for the patent was published on June 19, 2026, under issue no. 25/2026.

Abstract: ABSTRACT UAV load-clamp mechanism specifically developed for reliable payload retention and controlled de-clamping at designated GPS locations. The proposed assembly provides an efficient and secure solution for handling sensitive payloads, ensuring stable transport and accurate release through drone landing rather than mid- air dropping. Unlike conventional delivery drones that lower packages using cables or release them from a height, this mechanism emphasizes gentle placement to minimize impact and enhance safety. The system is designed to accommodate payloads up to 5 kg, aligning with typical UAV operational standards. Functional testing was conducted over a beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) range of approximately 5 km, demonstrating consistent performance and endurance under harsh environmental conditions. The de-clamping operation exhibited high positional accuracy, confirming its suitability for precise delivery applications. The prototype was specifically developed for medical and drug delivery scenarios, where controlled handling is critical. The payload hook mechanism incorporates a servo-driven release unit utilizing a sliding pin or push-pull rod for actuation. This arrangement supports both manual remote triggering and automated release through flight controller integration. Additionally, the design incorporates a smooth release strategy to reduce shock loading, along with an emergency fail-safe capability in the event of actuator malfunction.
