MUMBAI, India, July 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411095609 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Delhi on December 04, 2024, for Four-Wire Off-Grid Dfig-Battery Wind Microgrid With Neutral Current Compensation For Enhanced Transformer Protection And Reliability.

Abstract: The invention presents a novel four-wire off-grid wind turbine-driven Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) with a Battery Energy Storage (BES) based Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) for remote areas. The system includes a Grid-Forming Converter (GFC) (4) with a fourth leg dedicated to neutral current control, preventing the WECS transformer (1) from being burdened with unbalanced and harmonic currents. This reduces heating and potential failure, enhancing transformer lifespan. The GFC compensates for load harmonics, improving power quality at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) (2) and aligning with IEEE std. 519-2022. The system ensures Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) operation of the WECS, maintaining optimal power extraction from the wind turbine (3). The independent operation of the GFC ensures continuous compensation for harmonic and neutral currents, even during WECS maintenance, enhancing system reliability and efficiency. The proposed architecture provides a robust solution for off-grid wind energy systems in remote areas.
