Abstract: FUNCTIONALLY GRADED TaN/CrN/ZrN THIN FILM COATING SYSTEM FOR Ti-6Al-4V BIOMEDICAL ALLOY SUBSTRATES The present invention relates to a functionally graded multilayer thin film coating comprising tantalum nitride (TaN), chromium nitride (CrN), and zirconium nitride (ZrN) deposited on Ti- 6Al-4V alloy substrates for biomedical implant applications. The coating is fabricated using a DC magnetron sputtering process and comprises a TaN-dominant bottom layer, a mixed CrN–ZrN intermediate layer, and a ZrN-dominant top layer to provide a controlled compositional gradient. The coatings are deposited at substrate temperatures ranging from 250°C to 550°C under controlled argon and nitrogen gas flow conditions. Experimental evaluation using FE-SEM, EDS, XRD, and nanoindentation confirms the formation of dense, well-adhered coatings with uniform elemental distribution and distinct TaN, CrN, and ZrN phases. An optimized deposition temperature of about 450°C provides a balanced combination of hardness of 34.31 GPa, phase stability, coating integrity, wear resistance, and resistance to deformation without significant interdiffusion between layers. The functionally graded coating minimizes metal ion release and improves the mechanical durability and biocompatibility of Ti-6Al-4V substrates, making it suitable for load-bearing orthopedic implants and other biomedical devices.
