MUMBAI, India, Aug. 10 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202531035713 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Kharagpur on July 11, 2025, for Glucose And Xylose Co-Utilization By Engineered Saccharomyces Cerevisiae For Bioethanol Production.

Inventors include Ghosh, Dr. Amit; and Patra, Mr. Pradipta.

The application for the patent was published on July 31, 2026, under issue no. 31/2026.

Abstract: GLUCOSE AND XYLOSE CO-UTILIZATION BY ENGINEERED SACCHAROMYCES CEREVISIAE FOR BIOETHANOL PRODUCTION The present invention relates to development of a metabolically engineered S. cerevisiae strain capable of co-utilization of glucose and xylose in mixed sugar fermentation. The recombinant glucose-xylose co-utilizing S. cerevisiae harbored heterologous expression of XYL1 (xylose reductase), XYL2 (xylitol dehydrogenase) and XYL3 (xylulokinase) from naturally xylose utilizing yeast, Pichia stipitis and upregulated PPP gene transketolase (TKL). Along with it, a single nucleotide mutation (F79S) has been incorporated into the endogenous HXT7 gene for efficient xylose uptake. These genetic modifications help to overcome bottlenecks like imbalanced co-factor usage in the metabolic pathway, elimination of xylitol accumulation, adequate formation of xylulose-5-phosphate and efficient uptake of xylose into the S. cerevisiae. Moreover, modification of genes at the genome level will deliver stable gene expression by the recombinant host which will be beneficial for industrial applications.
