Abstract: ABSTRACT A flame-retardant composite laminate comprises an epoxy resin matrix with uniformly dispersed graphene nanoparticles at 0.5 wt.% to 2.0 wt.%, reinforced by stacked sisal or hemp natural fiber layers. The composite is fabricated by dispersing graphene nanoparticles in liquid epoxy resin via mechanical stirring at 500 rpm for 30 minutes, mixing a hardener, impregnating natural fiber layers in a 300 mm × 300 mm × 3 mm mold using a hand lay-up process, and curing at ambient temperature for 24 hours. Upon exposure to heat or flame, the graphene promotes formation of a protective carbonaceous char layer that reduces heat transfer, restricts oxygen diffusion, and minimizes flame propagation. The composite exhibits UL-94 horizontal burn rates below 40 mm/min and improved self-extinguishing behavior, making it suitable for aerospace, automotive, marine, construction, railway, and electrical insulation applications requiring enhanced fire safety and lightweight structural performance.
