MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511087719 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Roorkee on September 15, 2025, for Hetero-Structured Scintillator For Time-Of-Flight Radiation Detection And A Method Thereof.

Inventors include Anand, Vivek; and Gourishetty, Anil Kumar.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a method (500) for fabricating a hetero-structured scintillator-based radiation detector. The hetero-structured scintillator-based radiation detector includes a plastic scintillator component comprising a polymeric matrix doped with organic fluorophores, a dense inorganic scintillator component formed from three-dimensionally printed composite materials containing inorganic powders, and an integration interface joining the components. The method (500) operates without the need for specialized high-temperature furnaces, costly single-crystal growth, or precision drilling. The method (500) uses three-dimensional printing techniques to integrate the scintillator components into geometrically optimized structures, such as planar interlocked configurations or sinusoidal fiber configurations, based on application-specific requirements. The method (500) ensures that structural voids and delamination are eliminated, substantially reducing optical interface mismatches and poor light coupling while effectively combining the fast timing characteristics of plastic scintillators with the superior stopping power of high-Z inorganic scintillators to improve the overall detection efficiency.
