Abstract: Disclosed is a wastewater treatment system that includes a perforated housing and a plurality of hybrid biocomposite-beads. The perforated housing is configured to allow a radial flow of wastewater. The hybrid biocomposite-beads are disposed within the perforated housing. Each of the plurality of hybrid biocomposite-beads includes a biochar matrix derived from biomass, a plurality of metal components, a binder material, and an immobilized microbial consortium. The metal components are incorporated into the biochar matrix for improved functionalization of biochar. The binder material is configured to provide a structural integrity to the plurality of hybrid biocomposite-beads. The immobilized microbial consortium is supported on the biochar matrix. The perforated housing is configured to be at least partially submerged in wastewater such that wastewater flows through the perforated housing and contacts the plurality of hybrid biocomposite-beads.
