Abstract: The present invention relates to a high strength hot rolled steel that may be used to produce components for plate for industrial applications, for instance, in load bearing components such as mobile cranes, booms, bridges including lifting & excavation. The steel comprises the following composition expressed in weight %: Carbon (C): 0.11% - 0.14%, Manganese (Mn): 1.0% - 1.3%, Chromium (Cr): 0.15-0.3%, Silicon (Si): 0.15%-0.3%, Sulphur (S): 0.002% - 0.008%, Phosphorus (P): 0.015% - 0.025%, Nickel (Ni): 0.2 - 0.3%, Niobium (Nb): 0.01-0.03%, Molybdenum (Mo): 0.1% - 0.16%, Aluminium (Al): 0.01 – 0.05%, Nitrogen (N): 0.004 – 0.01 %, and the remaining being substantially iron and incidental impurities. The high strength hot rolled steel comprises a microstructure of less than 10% carbide, 10-30% mixture of martensite and ferrite and 70-80% bainite. The high strength hot rolled steel exhibits a yield strength (YS) of more than 600 - 650 MPa, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) 700 - 750 MPa, and Elongation – 14 - 18%.
