Abstract: ABSTRACT HILL START ASSIST (HSA) FUNCTIONALITY FOR NON-ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) VEHICLES Approaches for implementing an HSA functionality in non-ABS vehicles are described. In an example, a non-ABS vehicle includes a primary speed 5 sensor and a secondary speed sensor for redundant speed detection. An HSA control unit monitors the primary speed signal to detect the operating state of the primary speed sensor. If the primary sensor is operating normally, the vehicle speed is determined based on its signal. However, if a failure state is detected, the control unit switches to the secondary speed 10 sensor's backup signal. The HSA functionality is activated based on this reliably determined vehicle speed. The system may also incorporate GPS speed data and inclination sensor information to enhance decision-making.
