MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611065648 A) filed by Chandigarh University on May 25, 2026, for Hybrid Radial-Flow Filtration Cartridge Employing Dead Fungal Biomass For Uranium Removal From Groundwater.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a hybrid bio-physical filtration system for removal of uranium from contaminated groundwater using dead fungal biomass. The system comprises an inner perforated tube, a fungal biomass sheath, a porous support layer, and an outer protective mesh arranged in a concentric radial-flow configuration. Contaminated groundwater enters through the inner perforated tube and flows radially outward through the fungal biomass sheath, wherein uranium ions are adsorbed onto functional groups present on the dead fungal biomass. The radial-flow arrangement improves hydraulic distribution, enhances mass transfer efficiency, and minimizes channel formation commonly observed in conventional packed-bed systems. The porous support layer maintains structural integrity of the biomass sheath, while the outer protective mesh provides mechanical protection. The filtration cartridge is modular, regenerable, low-cost, and suitable for continuous-flow village-scale water purification applications. The invention further provides an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient alternative for decentralized uranium remediation from groundwater sources.
