Abstract: [0059] The invention relates to improvement of reserpine production in cell suspension cultures of Rauwolfia serpentina. The issue to be addressed is the low yield and safety issues associated with the traditional production methods. In this case, the method of interest involves the use of cell suspension cultures of Rauwolfia serpentina, preparation of the non-viable, cell-free elicitor derived from the culture of Trichoderma viride fungus and the subsequent addition of the elicitor to the cell suspension culture. This strategy of biotic elicitation safely and dramatically increases reserpine yield while stimulating the secondary metabolite pathway of the plant cells, eliminating the dangers of microbial contamination and cytotoxicity that are associated with standard production techniques. This also provides a sustainable and easily scaled substitute to traditional extraction methods.
