MUMBAI, India, Aug. 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641095242 A) filed by Parimala Devi M; and Velalar College Of Engineering And Technology on August 06, 2026, for Intelligent Real Time Support For Vision Impairment.
Inventors include Dr. M. Parimala Devi; G Boopathi Raja; and Dr. V. Gowrishankar.
The application for the patent was published on August 14, 2026, under issue no. 33/2026.
Abstract: More than 2.2 billion people worldwide are estimated to have some degree of visual impairment. Conventional mobility aids such as walking canes can only provide partial detection of very close-range objects but not sufficient spatial awareness that would allow a user to move safely and confidently in dynamic and modern environments. Though there are numerous assistive devices available for the visually impaired in the market, those devices are said to be very costly. Also, those devices are not sufficient because of single focused solutions and in-availability of various parameters required for the visually impaired. Visually Impaired are much deficient in terms of identification of distant obstacles, identifying currency denominations, private space objects and identification of complicated indoor and outdoor routes. These deficiencies usually lead to frustration, dependence and a lot of reliance on other people in getting from one place to another and generally for orientation purposes. The proposed system utilizes a combination of modern sensing, navigation and artificial intelligence technologies. A Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor is employed to provide 360-degree obstacle detection which enables real-time awareness of surrounding objects and their distances. For navigation purposes, the system integrates Map Box API to deliver accurate route guidance and directional assistance allowing users to travel independently in unfamiliar outdoor environments. For indoor assistance, the system leverages the Open-Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV) along with Ollama-based AI models to recognize objects and identify essential items in the user vision. Additionally, the system incorporates currency recognition functionality, specifically tailored to detect Indian currency denominations, thereby facilitating secure and independent financial transactions. Furthermore, Twilio API is enabled for driving the SOS Alerts to the contacts. Overall, this system aims to provide a comprehensive, intelligent, and user-friendly assistive solution that significantly improves mobility, safety, and independence for visually impaired individuals.
