Abstract: The present disclosure relates to an inter-serpentine flow field (ISFF) for distributing reactant fluid to a porous electrode of an electrochemical cell. The ISFF combines a continuous serpentine inlet flow path with a downstream interdigitated exit configuration, wherein reactant fluid flows continuously from an inlet header through serpentine channels and is subsequently forced to pass through an under-the-rib region of the porous electrode before exiting through an outlet header. This hybrid configuration reduces residence time of species within the porous electrode while minimizing dependence on uniform fluid splitting from the inlet header. The serpentine inlet portion includes channel segments having progressively reduced cross-sections to maintain substantially constant flow velocity as fluid permeates into the porous electrode. The inlet header further comprises solid support pillars configured to support the porous electrode and dstribute fluid to the serpentine segments. The inter-serpentine flow field enables improved reactant utilization, uniform electrochemical activity, reduced reactant starvation, and low pressure drop in the electrochemical cell.
