Abstract: The invention relates to an intelligent Internet of Things (IoT)-based automated electronic waste identification and smart sorting system designed to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and sustainability of electronic waste management. The proposed system integrates multiple sensing modules including RFID sensors, camera modules, weight sensors, metal detection sensors, and gas sensors for identifying and classifying different categories of electronic waste. Sensor data are transmitted through an IoT gateway to an edge computing unit where machine learning algorithms perform classification and decision-making processes. The proposed architecture employs image processing and multi-sensor fusion techniques to distinguish among plastics, metals, batteries, printed circuit boards, cables, and hazardous electronic components. Based on classification outcomes, an automated sorting mechanism comprising servo-controlled conveyor diverters directs waste into designated bins. Cloud connectivity enables real-time monitoring, inventory management, predictive analytics, and collection optimization. Experimental evaluation demonstrates improved classification accuracy, reduced sorting time, minimized human intervention, and enhanced recycling efficiency. The system supports smart city initiatives and circular economy principles by enabling scalable and intelligent e-waste processing.
