Abstract: The present invention relates to a jointless concrete pavement structure with pre-stressed tendons for reduced maintenance. The structure comprises a subgrade, a stabilised base, a low-friction interlayer and a continuous concrete slab free of intermediate transverse contraction joints along a pre-stressed section length. Longitudinal, and optionally transverse, pre-stressing tendons housed in corrosion-protected ducts are embedded in the slab and stressed against anchorage assemblies to impart a residual compressive stress that offsets traffic, shrinkage and thermal tensile stresses, thereby suppressing cracking. Terminal joint assemblies at the section ends accommodate slab movement. A staged stressing sequence and optional embedded sensors permit verification of the retained pre-stress. By eliminating vulnerable joints, the invention reduces joint sealing, dowel repair and slab replacement, shortens traffic closures, improves ride quality and lowers the lifecycle cost of highway and heavy-duty pavements.
