MUMBAI, India, July 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411096243 A) filed by Center Of Innovative And Applied Bioprocessing Ciab on December 06, 2024, for Lignin-Derived Biomaterials For Carbon Capture And Utilization Thereof.

Inventors include Jayeeta Bhaumik; Anil Kumar Pujari; Yeddula Nikhileshawar Reddy; and Ravneet Kaur.

The application for the patent was published on July 24, 2026, under issue no. 30/2026.

Abstract: The amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) generated by fossil fuel burning and the rapid growth of industries is increasing at an alarming rate. The decreased CO2 levels are urgently required, and atmospheric CO2 can be taken advantage of to convert into various valuable chemicals. The CO2 capturing/utilization and sequestering help in reducing the elevated levels and stand as critical components in the fight against the climate crisis. The materials currently being used for CO2capture are toxic, and involve energy-intensive processes, therefore their usage is being reconsidered. Alternatives such as bio-based porous materials are being evaluated to reduce energy consumption and lower carbon footprint. A large amount of lignin is generated as a by-product, which is expected to be doubled by 2030. Lignin, a complex and abundant biopolymer generally obtained as waste, has gained significant attention in recent years as a promising raw material for the development of biomaterials. Utilizing lignin-derived adsorbents is a smart platform for applications in CO2capture. By utilizing green, cost-effective and sustainable strategy to engineer lignin- derived biomaterials and nano-adsorbent CO2 is captured and utilized for the generation of value-added products. Low-cost, minimal synthetic steps are used to engineer lignin-based biomaterials and nano-adsorbents requiring low-energy techniques to capture and utilize CO2.
