Abstract: Abstract: Title: Low Cost Scalable 1-Bit Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) with Compact Size and Symmetric Wide Beam Steering. The present invention discloses a scalable reconfigurable electromagnetic system based on reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for programmable control of reflection of incident electromagnetic waves. The system comprises a scalable reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) based structure including compact array of unit cells with each unit cell adaptable to independent control, a multilayer structure associated with each unit cell having a radiating layer, a ground layer, an air gap, and a biasing layer, an embedded biasing network integrated with the biasing layer with intermediary air gap based separation for reducing RF–DC coupling said network including at least one PIN diode configured to provide 1-bit phase switching states and a microcontroller assisted programmable switching unit to generate control signals and selectively apply bias voltages to the PIN diodes of the unit cells for independently controlling reflection phase states of the respective unit cells enabling phase reconfiguration and control of direction of reflection of incident electromagnetic waves through said independently controlled unit cells.
