MUMBAI, India, Aug. 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641096853 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology on August 11, 2026, for Machine Learning Based Earth Rotation Aware Targeted Cubesat Re-Entry System.
Inventors include Kavitha Kv N; and C. Sathiyavel.
The application for the patent was published on August 14, 2026, under issue no. 33/2026.
Abstract: ABSTRACT MACHINE LEARNING BASED EARTH ROTATION AWARE TARGETED CUBESAT RE-ENTRY SYSTEM An onboard targeted re-entry system (400) for a spacecraft includes a plurality of sensors configured to acquire current orbital state data of the spacecraft, including a GNSS receiver (401), an inertial measurement unit (402), a star tracker (403), and an atmospheric sensor (404). An onboard computer (405) is communicatively coupled to the plurality of sensors and includes a trained machine learning prediction module (405b) configured to receive the current orbital state data, receive an Earth rotation angle as an input parameter, and predict an optimal deorbit burn timing based on the current orbital state data and the Earth rotation angle to compensate for rotational displacement of the Earth during an orbital transfer phase. A deorbit control unit (407) receives the predicted optimal deorbit burn timing. A propulsion system (408) executes a deorbit burn at the predicted optimal deorbit burn timing to achieve atmospheric re-entry at a target re-entry location. (FIG. 1)
