Abstract: ABSTRACT Magnetically Assisted Trench Plate System for the Selective Isolation of Metal-Cycling Microorganisms This patent application relates to a structurally and functionally enhanced, single-use petri plate system, which is magnetically assisted, for the selective cultivation, isolation and harvesting of metal-cycling microorganisms, by forming a standardized inoculation trench directly above the magnetic field source. The system comprises an upper plate (1) incorporated with an integrated, yet detachable, trench-forming member (3), which penetrates the molten growth medium, to form a trench of predetermined dimensions on solidification. The lower plate (2) comprises a plurality of magnet-receiving compartments (6) with removable covering discs, positioned in a predetermined spatial configuration with respect to the longitudinal axis of the trench-forming region, to house magnets, while permitting minimal lateral movement. As each experimental setup receives substantially identical inoculum geometry and experiences comparable magnetic field exposure, improved repeatability and reduced operator-induced variability is observed.
