MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411095454 A) filed by Lovely Professional University on December 04, 2024, for Magnetically Functionalized Biopolymer For Targeted Heavy Metal Capture And Recycling.
Inventors include Prasann Kumar; Mastu Patel; and Polu Picheswara Rao.
The application for the patent was published on July 17, 2026, under issue no. 29/2026.
Abstract: The invention provides a magnetically functionalized biopolymer for the efficient capture and recycling of heavy metals from contaminated water. Comprising a natural biopolymer, such as chitosan, cellulose, or alginate, with embedded magnetic nanoparticles, the material allows for easy separation using an external magnetic field. The biopolymer binds heavy metals like lead, cadmium, copper, and arsenic through ionic interactions and complexation. After adsorption, the biopolymer can be separated from water using magnetic forces, and the captured metals can be recovered through desorption. This innovation offers an eco-friendly, reusable, and cost-effective solution for heavy metal remediation and resource recovery, providing an effective alternative to traditional water treatment methods.
