Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A device may map, according to a rule, a reference signal identifier to at least one transmission configuration indicator (TCI) state of a set of one or more TCI states associated with a TCI codepoint. The TCI codepoint may include one or more of a downlink TCI state, an uplink TCI state, or a joint TCI state. The device may select the at least one TCI state for the reference signal, by switching to the at least one TCI state or activating the at least one TCI state.
