Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a marine sensing unit (102) for autonomous ocean profiling floats (100A). The sensing unit (102) includes a waterproof housing unit (102-2) enclosing an acoustic sensor (106), a preprocessing unit (108), a power management unit (112), and a processing unit (110). The acoustic sensor captures underwater signals, which are conditioned by an analog front-end and a wake-on-sound comparator (108-4) for energy-based activation. The processing unit (110) integrates a quantized neural network trained to classify underwater acoustic events. The sensing unit (102) performs real-time classification of captured signals, synchronizes events with contextual oceanographic parameters, and combines metadata and profile summaries into compressed data structures. The data packages are transmitted via a communication interface (120) to a remote endpoint (116) during surfacing, with alerts generated through an output interface (118) upon detection of target events. The sensing unit (102) enables autonomous, low-power, and bandwidth-optimized marine monitoring.
