Abstract: The invention relates to a tutoring system that takes the learner's own knowledge state into account when it decides which study material to fetch. Passages found by a combined dense and keyword search are rescored using three things: how close each passage is to the question, how large the learner's gap is on the concepts the passage covers, and whether it addresses a prerequisite the learner has not yet mastered. A set of cooperating software agents, run as a state graph, looks up missing prerequisites on a dependency graph and teaches and tests the weakest one first, repeating until none is left. A language model then explains the topic from the best- ranked passages, quiz answers are scored, mastery is revised by an Elo-style update, and the next topic is suggested. Two learners asking the same question therefore see different material.
