Abstract: The present invention relates to a horticultural method for controlling apical dominance and improving lateral branching in ornamental plants. The method comprises the exogenous application of a cytokinin-based composition to ornamental plants during the active vegetative growth phase. The composition comprises 6- benzylaminopurine (6-BAP) or kinetin at a concentration of 100 ppm to 1000 ppm in an aqueous carrier with a wetting agent at 0.01% to 0.05% v/v and pH 5.5 to 6.5. The composition is applied by foliar spray or apical bud dip for 2 to 4 applications at an interval of 10 to 15 days. The cytokinin application inhibits auxin-mediated apical dominance, promotes lateral bud release through antagonism of BRC1/TCP transcription factor repression and activation of axillary meristem cell division, and increases the number of primary and secondary branches by 40% to 70% relative to untreated controls. The method results in enhanced canopy density, at least 60% increase in flower-bearing nodes, and significantly improved marketable aesthetic quality of ornamental plants including Chrysanthemum morifolium, Petunia hybrida, and Bougainvillea spectabilis, without phytotoxicity or adverse effects on plant vigour.
