Inventors include Dr. Priyanka M; Dr Kotteeswaran S; Dr Manibalan P; Dr Kesavamoorthi R; and Dr Sangeetha S.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention relates to an environmental monitoring and assessment system for characterizing atmospheric secondary organic matter (SOM) and predicting its influence on interactions between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and microplastics. The invention utilizes excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with Parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC) to identify fluorescent components present in atmospheric deposition, rainwater, aerosols, and aquatic environments. The identified fluorescent signatures are correlated with PFAS adsorption and transport behavior on virgin and aged microplastics. The method provides a rapid, cost-effective, and predictive approach for assessing the environmental fate, mobility, and ecological risks of emerging contaminants.
