Abstract: The present invention relates to temperature measurement and instrumentation engineering, and more particularly to a system and method for improving cold junction compensation accuracy in thermocouple-based temperature measurement systems. The invention comprises a thermocouple, a cold junction temperature sensor, thermocouple and cold junction signal conditioning units, a processing module, and an output interface. The processing module determines a cold junction temperature from the conditioned cold junction temperature sensor signal, dynamically compensates the cold junction temperature to account for differences in the dynamic response characteristics of the thermocouple and the cold junction temperature sensor, converts the compensated cold junction temperature into an equivalent thermocouple electromotive force using forward thermocouple polynomial coefficients, combines the equivalent thermocouple electromotive force with the measured thermocouple electromotive force, and determines the hot junction temperature using inverse thermocouple polynomial coefficients. The invention reduces transient measurement errors caused by differences in sensor response characteristics, improves temperature measurement accuracy during transient operating conditions, and is suitable for implementation using analog or digital processing in industrial automation, process control, and smart temperature transmitter applications.
