Abstract: A method for controlling a multimode voltage source inverter that interfaces a distributed energy resource with a utility grid and local loads is disclosed. The method continuously measures grid voltage, frequency, phase angle and inverter current, and passes the measured signals through a comb filter that compares present and delayed values to detect voltage sag, voltage swell, phase jump, frequency deviation, outage and islanding in real time. Based on the detected condition, a digital controller automatically selects grid-following, grid-supporting or grid-forming operation. During normal grid conditions the inverter synchronizes with the utility and controls power injection. Upon a contingency, the inverter transitions seamlessly to grid-forming mode, establishing local voltage and frequency for critical loads while noncritical loads are shed, with minimal inrush current, voltage overshoot and supply interruption. An infinite impulse response peak filter pre-filters the measured signals. The method reconnects automatically upon restoration of grid conditions and supports renewable sources including solar, wind and battery storage. Each transition event is recorded by the controller for diagnostic purposes, and the comb filter thresholds and time delay can be configured for a particular installation. Compared with multi-controller arrangements, the single voltage source inverter reduces hardware, control redundancy, installation cost and maintenance requirements while preserving power quality at the point of common coupling. The arrangement is suitable for hospitals, data centers, telecommunication systems, industrial facilities and remote microgrids where continuity of supply is essential.
