Abstract: A method (300) for manufacturing a continuously compositionally graded functionally graded metallic component (200) is disclosed. The method comprises obtaining a digital model of the functionally graded metallic component (200), providing a first metallic powder (102) and a second metallic powder (104) to a directed metal deposition system (100), configuring deposition parameters including laser power, scan velocity, and powder feed rate, and depositing successive metallic layers while progressively varying relative proportions of the first metallic powder (102) and the second metallic powder (104). The deposited metallic layers form a continuously compositionally graded transition region (202) extending between a first metallic region (204) and a second metallic region (206). The deposited layers are subsequently solidified to obtain the continuously compositionally graded functionally graded metallic component (200). The disclosed method facilitates formation of a substantially continuous compositional gradient and metallurgical bonding between dissimilar metallic materials for manufacturing functionally graded metallic components.
