Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for printing a security document having a character string (24) deviating from a linear orientation, a numbering machine (2, 102, 202) and a numbering unit therefor. It also relates to the use of such devices and to security documents printed with said character strings (24). With regard to further increasing the security against forgery of security documents printed with corresponding character strings (24), in particular serial numbers, compared to known solutions, the invention proposes the use of at least two different numbering machines (2, 102, 202) for applying a single character string (24), in particular a serial number, to a security document. Accordingly, the division of the printing of a character string (24), in particular a serial number, between two different numbering machines (2, 102, 202) is preferred.
