Abstract: ABSTRACT METHOD FOR PRODUCING CI200 GREY CAST IRON CASTINGS BY CONTROLLED MAGNETIC FIELD, COPPER AND SHAKE-OUT The present invention relates to a method (100) for producing CI200 grade grey cast iron castings by controlled metallurgical and solidification processing. The method comprises melting (102) a CI200 grade grey cast iron charge, incorporating (104) copper into the molten cast iron, introducing (106) the molten cast iron into a mould defining a casting cavity, applying (108) a magnetic field to the molten cast iron during at least a portion of solidification, and maintaining (110) the casting within the mould for a controlled shake-out duration before removal. A magnetic-field intensity, a copper concentration and the shake-out duration are jointly controlled to regulate molten-metal flow, heat transfer, solidification behaviour and subsequent microstructural development. The magnetic field may be generated by a plurality of permanent magnets positioned externally of the mould and arranged around the casting cavity. The controlled processing produces a substantially homogeneous microstructure comprising Type-A graphite flakes distributed in a pearlitic matrix. (To be published along with FIG. 1)
