Abstract: ABSTRACT Method for Quantifying Alcohols in Gasoline Using Mass-Fraction Absorbance through Preferentially Soluble Dyes The invention provides a method for quantifying alcohol concentration in gasoline using a dye solution that is soluble in water and ethanol but insoluble in gasoline. The method relies on measuring absorbance changes in the dye solution as it is diluted by the alcohol present in the gasoline. The dilution effect, caused by the alcohol's interaction with the dye, shifts the dye's absorbance due to dilution through mass fraction difference, enabling the determination of ethanol concentration based on mass fraction-based absorbance principles. The dye is selected from various families, including azo, anthraquinone, and triphenylmethane, among others, exhibiting distinct solubility profiles. The absorbance is measured using photometric devices like spectrophotometers, and a calibration curve is established by plotting known ethanol concentrations against corresponding absorbance values. This allows for the determination of ethanol content in unknown gasoline samples. The method provides a simple, effective approach for alcohol quantification, even in gasoline samples containing minimal alcohol.
