Abstract: ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION METHOD FOR SYNTHESIZING DEFECT-ENGINEERED ZNO/CUO P–N HETEROJUNCTION NANOCOMPOSITE VIA PHYTOCHEMICAL-ASSISTED CO-PRECIPITATION The present invention relates to a method for synthesizing a defect-engineered ZnO/CuO p–n heterojunction nanocomposite. The method comprises preparing equimolar aqueous precursor solutions of zinc nitrate and copper nitrate, mixing the same under continuous stirring, and heating the mixture at 60 °C to obtain a homogeneous solution. A phytochemical extract, preferably derived from Withania somnifera leaves, is added to the reaction mixture as a reducing, capping, and stabilizing agent. The pH of the reaction mixture is adjusted to 10 by controlled addition of sodium hydroxide solution to induce simultaneous co-precipitation of zinc and copper hydroxides. The reaction mixture is maintained under controlled conditions to facilitate nucleation and interfacial growth, followed by separation, washing, and drying to obtain a precursor material. The precursor is calcined at about 450 °C to obtain a defect-engineered ZnO/CuO p-n heterojunction nanocomposite comprising crystalline phases, oxygen vacancies, and strong interfacial coupling.
