Abstract: Method of making Biodegradable Antibacterial Nonwoven Sheets from Water Hyacinth and Cotton Fiber Blend This invention describes a method for preparing biodegradable, antibacterial nonwoven sheets using water hyacinth with cotton fiber and optional recycled paper pulp. The process includes chopping water hyacinth, boiling with 5% NaOH for 45–60 minutes, cooling, washing, and neutralizing with acetic acid. The neutralized mass is blended to a fine paste and combined with cotton fibers (5–25% by weight) and, optionally, paper pulp (0–25%). The mixture is dispersed in a water-filled tray (about 10–15 liters), and a mesh screen mounted on a wooden frame is immersed and moved to accumulate a uniform layer. The wet sheet is removed and dried under ambient conditions or with low-temperature drying. The resultant sheet is antibacterial, eco-friendly, and biodegradable, suitable for tissue papers, envelope papers, absorbent sheets, packaging, cardboard-like products, and medical uses. The method supports effective waste management and practical scaling using low-cost, semi-automated approaches.
