Abstract: The present invention relates to an eco-friendly method for synthesizing zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using Lepidium virginicum plant extract as a natural reducing and stabilizing agent. The method comprises preparation of plant extract, mixing with zinc chloride precursor solution under optimized conditions including 0.3 M precursor concentration, 3:2 extract-to-metal ratio, pH 7, 48-hour reaction time, and 60°C temperature, followed by centrifugation, purification, and drying to obtain stable ZnO nanoparticles. Characterisation studies confirmed formation of crystalline hexagonal wurtzite ZnO nanoparticles with nanoscale dimensions and moderate colloidal stability. The synthesised nanoparticles exhibited enhanced corrosion inhibition efficiency of up to 91–93.79% for mild steel in 0.5 M hydrochloric acid medium through the formation of a protective barrier layer. Additionally, the nanoparticles demonstrated effective photocatalytic degradation of dye pollutants in wastewater, thereby providing a multifunctional, sustainable, and cost-effective solution for corrosion protection and environmental remediation applications.
