Abstract: ABSTRACT METHOD OF PRODUCING A COLOUR-ANODISED TITANIUM SURFACE AND MATERIAL OBTAINED THEREBY A method of producing a colour-anodised titanium surface comprises two sequential steps on a titanium substrate. In a first step 200, the titanium substrate is arranged as a cathode and a counter- electrode as an anode in an electrolytic cell containing an aqueous electrolyte comprising a nitrogen-containing salt; a voltage is applied and increased until a plasma discharge is initiated and sustained at the substrate surface, forming a titanium nitride-containing layer. In a second step 202, the nitrided substrate is arranged as an anode and a counter-electrode as a cathode in a further electrolytic cell containing an aqueous electrolyte comprising an acid; a voltage is applied to form a coloured anodic oxide layer on the titanium nitride-containing layer. A colour-anodised titanium material obtainable by this method is also disclosed, comprising a titanium substrate, a titanium nitride-containing layer, and a coloured anodic oxide layer disposed thereon.
