Abstract: The present invention relates to a nitrate-mediated microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) system employing an aqueous, water-soluble electron donor polysaccharide solution in combination with sodium nitrate to improve hydrocarbon recovery from subterranean reservoirs. The composition comprises electron donor polysaccharide having a galactomannan or D glucan sugars with trisaccharide side chain and sodium nitrate at concentrations effective to stimulate beneficial microbial activity. The polymer solution exhibits enhanced viscosity retention, thermal and chemical stability under high salinity, variable pH, and elevated temperature conditions, and is capable of altering reservoir rock wettability from oil-wet to water-wet. Methods for preparation, injection, and evaluation of the composition under reservoir-simulated conditions are also disclosed, providing an efficient, environmentally compatible MEOR approach for enhanced oil recovery.
