MUMBAI, India, June 26 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641071255 A) filed by Ananda Rama Krishnan Selvaraj; and Vidyashankar Shivashankaran on June 08, 2026, for Multi-Ferroic Liquid Crystal Solar Cell With Graphene And Lyotropic Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Redox Of Achiral 4-Ethoxyphenyl 4-Butylbenzoate.

Inventor includes Dr. Rer. Nat. Ananda Rama Krishnan Selvaraj.

The application for the patent was published on June 19, 2026, under issue no. 25/2026.

Abstract: The present invention provides multi-ferroic liquid crystal (MLC) solar cell through incorporating graphene and lyotropic ferroelectric calamitic liquid crystal redox of achiral 4-ethoxyphenyl 4-butylbenzoate. Here the graphene deposited ITO glass electrodes used as light absorbing and light reflecting electrodes to improve the power conversion efficiency of the MLC solar cell. In this invention, the light absorbing and light reflecting components are purely organics. The found MLC solar cell has a first layer of graphene (102) and it is deposited on conductive indium doped tin oxide glass-electrode (101) and the second layer is lyotropic ferroelectric calamitic liquid crystal redox of achiral 4-ethoxyphenyl 4-butylbenzoate (103) and it is sandwiched between two metal-oxide ITO glass electrodes (101 and 105) and the third layer is light reflective graphene layer (104) and it is deposited on indium doped tin-oxide glass-electrode (105). The components between the two metal oxide (ITO) electrodes (101 and 105) are multi-ferroic solid-liquid crystal (graphene and lyotropic ferroelectric achiral 4-ethoxyphenyl 4-butylbenzoate liquid crystal redox) composite. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) value of MLC solar cell surpasses the SHOCKLEY-QUEISSER p-n single junction solar cell power conversion efficiency limit (31 %) and the THERMODYNAMIC power conversion efficiency limit of solar cells (43.9 %) as well as 100 %. The photon energy and dark energy from solid-liquid crystal multi-ferroic composite are allowing the found MLC solar cell to surpass 100 % power conversion efficiency value.
