Abstract: Disclosed is a multifunctional biodegradable composite film for active food packaging and real-time spoilage monitoring. The composite film comprises a polyvinyl alcohol-galactomannan polymer matrix, a corn silk extract, a butterfly pea flower extract, and a plasticizer. The polyvinyl alcohol-galactomannan polymer matrix forms a biodegradable film-forming network having hydrogen-bonding interaction, mechanical flexibility, moisture-interaction capability, and barrier performance. The corn silk extract comprises phenolic and flavonoid bioactive constituents that provide antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity for suppressing microbial proliferation associated with a packaged food product. The butterfly pea flower extract comprises anthocyanin-based pH-responsive pigments that produce a visible colour change in response to pH variation caused by spoilage of the packaged food product. The plasticizer reduces brittleness and improves flexibility of the film. The film provides active food preservation, intelligent freshness indication, real-time spoilage monitoring, and biodegradation after disposal in a single packaging platform.
