Abstract: The present invention relates to a system (100) for wastewater treatment and removal of heavy metal ions. The system (100) comprises a treatment reactor containing self-regenerating bio-hybrid nanosponges comprising magnetic nanoparticles (102), a biopolymer matrix (104), functional ligands (106), and a bio-regenerative component (110). The functional ligands (106) selectively bind heavy metal ions (108), while the magnetic nanoparticles (102) enable magnetic recovery. The system (100) further comprises a magnetic separation unit configured to separate metal-loaded nanosponges from treated wastewater and a regeneration module configured to restore active metal-binding sites through biological or enzymatic regeneration. A nanosponge recirculation pathway enables repeated adsorption-regeneration cycles, and an outlet discharges treated wastewater having reduced heavy metal concentration. The closed-loop configuration provides continuous metal removal, reduced sludge generation, improved recovery efficiency, and enhanced operational longevity for industrial wastewater treatment applications in large-scale continuous processing environments.
