Abstract: FORM 2 ABSTRACT Abstract Neonatal umbilical cord infections are a major concern in newborn healthcare, particularly for infants admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs). Early detection of infection is essent to prevent serious complications such as omphalitis and neonatal sepsis. Studies have reported th the incidence of omphalitis is approximately 0.7-1 per 1000 newborns in developed countries, while it can reach 8% in hospital births and up to 22% in home births in developing countries. In one study involving 769 newborns, about 8.5% developed umbilical cord infections, with most cases occurring during the first week after birth. These findings highlight the importance of continuous monitoring and timely intervention in neonatal care. To address this challenge, NeoCordCare — Real-Time Umbilical Detection System is proposed a: simple, reliable, and non-contact Detection solution for newborn infants. The system utilizes an ESP32-CAM module to capture images of the umbilical cord region at regular intervals. The captured images are processed using MATLAB-based image processing techniques to analyze visual indicators such as redness, discoloration, and other abnormal changes that may be associat with infection. The system performs image acquisition, preprocessing, feature extraction, and threshold-based analysis to determine whether the condition is normal or indicates a possible infection. When abnormal conditions are detected, the system generates a buzzer alert, enabling healthcare professionals to take appropriate action promptly. Unlike advanced Detection systems that depen on Artificial Intelligence and complex machine learning algorithms, NeoCordCare employs a straightforward image-processing approach, making it cost-effective, easy to implement, and suitable for prototype development. The proposed system supports continuous monitoring, reduc dependence on manual observation, and assists in the early detection of potential umbilical cord infections. Overall, NeoCordCare demonstrates the effective application of image-processing technology in neonatal healthcare and has the potential to improve patient safety, enhance neonai monitoring, and support timely clinical intervention in NICU environments.
