MUMBAI, India, July 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202341059947 A) filed by Christian Medical College on September 06, 2023, for Neurotrauma Assessment Device.
Inventors include Suresh R. Devasahayam; K. Srinivasa Babu; Sahil Gera; Manish Baldia; and Mathew Joseph.
The application for the patent was published on July 10, 2026, under issue no. 28/2026.
Abstract: ABSTRACT PORTABLE ONSITE NEUROTRAUMA ASSESSMENT DEVICE AND METHOD A portable, on-site spinal cord injury assessment device (10) and method (70) for monitoring of neural damage is disclosed which includes a transcranial electrical stimulator (12) operated by a portable power supply for delivering a programmed sequence of electrical pulses to the motor cortex resulting in elicit nerve action potentials in the motor cortex of the brain (25) and travelling via the spinal cord (27) to a plurality of peripheral nerves (18). A pair of hairbrush electrodes (16) each having a plurality of conductive bristles (17) applied across the midline on a scalp (13) to make an electrical contact with the scalp (13) and distribute a stimulation current from the transcranial electrical stimulator (12). A rectal probe connecting tube (21) having an anal sphincter pressure or force sensor (20, 60) inserted into a rectum to measure contraction of the sphincter (22) in response to the transcranial electrical stimulation and to monitor a peripheral motor response. The time of stimulation is synchronized with measurement of the peripheral motor response so that the latency as well as an amplitude of response is measured to monitor assessment of the nerve damage due to trauma and if the sphincter (22) contraction is absent, diminished in size, or of longer than normal latency then injury to the brain (25), the spinal cord (27) or the peripheral nerves (18) is indicated and appropriate care is provided.
