MUMBAI, India, Aug. 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511008525 A) filed by Chairman, Defence Research & Development on February 01, 2025, for Non-Carcinogenic Universal Filter Media For The Removal Of Chemical Warfare Agents And Toxic Industrial Gases.

Inventors include Akash Verma; Virendra Vikram Singh; Lokesh Kumar Pandey; Utpal Biswas; Sanjay Upadhyay; and Vikas Baburao Thakare.

The application for the patent was published on August 14, 2026, under issue no. 33/2026.

Abstract: The development of an efficient adsorbent material for the entrapment/removal of noxious gases and vapours from persistent and non-persistent chemical warfare agents and hazardous industrial gases has been disclosed. In this present invention, filter media that incorporate three distinct types of adsorbent materials were used to render a wide range of chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial gases respiratory protection. The three-filter media with unique chemistry were uniformly mixed in a precise ratio to develop the composite filter media. To make the initial filter media, activated carbon was first impregnated with CuCO3.Cu(OH)2, AgNO3, (Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6), NH4Mo6O24.7H2O, and triethylenediamine (TEDA) or DABCO (1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane). Acid refluxing of activated carbon followed by impregnation with CuCl2 and KI was used for the development of the second filter media. The third filter material was prepared by impregnation of activated carbon with CuCl2, NaOH, and KI. The current invention is not limited to the development of respiratory protective equipment; however, it can be used in the realm of air purification for industrial and chemical emergency applications.
