The present invention relates to novel organoselenium compounds of general formula I that can also be generally described as 3-((2-alkoxy-2-arylethyl)selanyl)-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridines or 3-((2-hydroxy-2-arylethyl)selanyl)-1H-pyrrolo[2,3- b]pyridines, which represent a potential class of biologically active compounds. The invention further relates to a process for the preparation of compounds of formula I by an efficient one step coupling process involving four chemical species.
