Abstract: Abstract Disclosed is an onboard pantograph surveillance system for monitoring a pantograph-catenary contact region of an electric railway vehicle. The system comprises a protective housing having a viewing window directed toward the pantograph-catenary contact region, a camera unit for capturing video data through the viewing window, an inertial sensing unit for generating motion data, a position module for generating speed, location, and time data, a cleaning unit for wiping the viewing window, and a processing unit. The processing unit receives video data, assesses visibility, actuates the cleaning unit when visibility is reduced, identifies a visual pantograph condition, receives motion data, compares the visual pantograph condition with the motion data, generates a verified pantograph event when correspondence is detected, associates the event with speed, location, and time data, and outputs the event for storage, display, or alert generation.
