MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621061436 A) filed by Pdpm Indian Institute Of Information Technology, Design And Manufacturing, Jabalpur on May 14, 2026, for Optimized Step Geometry In Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems Cantilever Sensors For High-Sensitivity Fluid Density Detection.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an optimized cantilever-based resonant sensor (100) for high-sensitivity fluid density measurement. The sensor (100) comprises a cantilever beam (102) having a fixed end (104) and a free end (106), wherein the cantilever beam (102) includes a stepped geometry comprising a stepped section (108) and a uniform section (110). The stepped section (108) is configured with an optimized step length ratio (l/L) of approximately 0.3 and a step thickness ratio (t/T) of approximately 0.2 to maximize resonant sensitivity. Exposure of the cantilever beam (102) to fluids of varying densities produces corresponding shifts in the fundamental resonant frequency, enabling accurate density estimation through a frequency–density relationship. The optimized stepped geometry improves the stiffness-to-mass distribution of the cantilever beam (102), thereby significantly enhancing sensitivity and measurement accuracy compared to conventional rectangular cantilever sensors.
