Abstract: Automatic cruise control in electric drives requires precise speed regulation under varying load conditions. This project presents a comparative study of BLDC motor speed control using three approaches: uncontrolled operation (open-loop), conventional PI controller, and fuzzy-tuned PI controller. The system is modeled and simulated using MATLAB/Simulink. In the uncontrolled mode, the motor exhibits poor speed regulation and instability due to the absence of feedback control. The PI controller improves system performance by reducing steady-state error; however, it shows noticeable overshoot and slower settling time under dynamic conditions. To overcome these limitations, a fuzzy logic-based tuning mechanism is implemented to dynamically adjust the proportional (Kp) and integral (Ki) gains based on error and change in error. The system performance is evaluated under no-load and varying load conditions, including step increase (+2 Nm) and step decrease (–2 Nm) in load torque. Simulation results demonstrate that the fuzzy-tuned PI controller significantly enhances system performance by reducing overshoot, improving settling time, and providing superior disturbance rejection capability. It maintains stable speed with minimal deviation under load variations compared to the PI controller. The proposed approach offers an effective and robust solution for high-performance BLDC motor control in applications such as electric vehicles and industrial automation systems.
