Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for preparing a polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-modified dense bituminous macadam (DBM) pavement composition and to the resulting composition. Waste PET bottles are cleaned, dried and shredded to particles having a size of 2 mm to 5 mm. VG-30 grade bitumen is heated to 150°C to 160°C, and the PET particles are incorporated at 8% by weight of the VG-30 grade bitumen while the bitumen is maintained within the stated temperature range. The PET particles are continuously mixed with the molten bitumen to form a homogeneous PET-modified bituminous binder before addition of coarse aggregates and fine aggregates. The aggregates are separately heated to 140°C to 160°C and mixed with the preformed binder until uniformly coated, after which the mixture is compacted and cooled to form the DBM pavement composition. As shown in FIG. 1, the process sequence provides formation of the PET-modified binder before aggregate coating. The composition further comprises a mineral filler forming part of the aggregate fraction, with an embodiment containing 4% to 6% mineral filler by weight of total aggregate material. Experimental evaluation identified the 8% PET formulation as the optimized embodiment based on Marshall Stability and volumetric properties.
